While Emmarae’s social media activity mirrored that of many teens, it also raised serious concerns. At just 13, she posted videos of herself driving in the early hours of the morning and shared provocative photos in lingerie. These posts, which now haunt her family, were early warnings of deeper issues. Her online behavior seemed to reflect a cry for help from a young girl already burdened by childhood trauma—trauma that her family says led to behavioral problems, substance abuse, and repeated attempts to run away.

By the time she turned 14, her life had taken a drastic turn. She had been in and out of rehab facilities in New York and Minnesota and spent time in juvenile detention after allegedly assaulting a police officer. Released into her father’s custody in September 2024 with an ankle monitor, Emmarae’s unstable environment only made her more susceptible to danger.

A Month of Horror

Emmarae’s disappearance marked the beginning of a nightmare. Prosecutors claim she was lured by a 35-year-old man she had met online, who allegedly knew her age and had been in contact with her since she was 13. Over the next 25 days, she was moved between abandoned houses, trailers, and eventually a 56-foot yacht owned by a 64-year-old man who planned to take her to the Carolinas. Hidden behind netting on the boat, Emmarae allegedly endured rape, drug coercion, and trafficking by a group of individuals, including two women who reportedly traded her for drugs.

Her father’s relentless efforts to find her—reminiscent of a real-life Taken scenario—culminated on January 3, 2025, when an anonymous tip led him to a marina. There, he discovered Emmarae, dehydrated and disoriented but alive. “It was a gift from God,” Frank later said, describing the rescue as the end of “26 days of hell.”

The Aftermath

Even after her rescue, Emmarae’s ordeal was far from over. A worker at a mental health facility where she was recovering was charged with sexually assaulting her—a devastating blow in an already traumatic journey. Meanwhile, eight individuals, including the yacht owner and the man accused of luring her, face charges ranging from kidnapping to sex trafficking. Defense attorneys have controversially argued that Emmarae was not held against her will, pointing to her alleged drug use and voluntary actions. Prosecutors, however, emphasize that as a minor, she was incapable of giving consent.
