After befriending the mother, a woman is accused of abducting the newborn.
According to police, the suspects allegedly used bear spray during the attempted kidnapping of an 8-day-old child.
Ottawa police have filed ten charges against a 32-year-old woman, including kidnapping and abuse, for allegedly abducting an eight-day-old child on Mother's Day.
News release issued Monday, the accused and new mother were communicating via a social media chat group. According to police, the accused told the new mother on Friday that she had won an award and delivered a gift to her home in west Ottawa.
The accused reportedly returned to the home around 1:40 p.m. Sunday, forced her way inside, subdued the residents with bear spray, and then fled with the newborn.
According to police, neighbors were alerted to the fracas and one "detained" the woman before officers arrived,.the boy sustained no physical injuries.
Nicole Shanks of Shawville, Quebec, is charged with the following:
- Kidnapping a child under the age of 14
- Defendant.
- Armed attack.
- Concealment of a firearm.
- Possession of a potentially lethal weapon.
- Intentionally breaking and entering a home.
- Harassment by observation and besetting.
- Additionally, three counts of administering a poisonous substance with the intent to endanger life have been filed.
Shanks appeared in court Monday morning and remains in custody until her next scheduled appearance on Friday, according to police.
According to police, investigators with the sexual harassment and child exploitation unit say the accused may have communicated with other new mothers who belong to similar communities.
