Newark's Nightmare: 8-Year-Old Shot Dead as Gun Violence Runs Rampant

An 8-year-old boy was shot dead Friday evening in Newark, just a few blocks away from where a 36-year-old man—also gunned down—was found moments later. The chilling violence unfolded near 130 Osborne Terrace, with the wounded man discovered at 38 Yates Street, just before 6 p.m., according to Carmen Martin from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

But here’s the kicker: Authorities won’t reveal whether these two shootings are connected, or if the victims even knew each other. What’s worse, neither victim has been named, and no arrests have been made—leaving the public to wonder how far this crisis will go.

The Newark Police Department is keeping tight-lipped, while the city’s violent crime continues to plague its streets. Despite a more than 20 percent drop in homicides, statistics show that violent crime overall is still on the rise. In response to the chaos, Newark officials last June decided it was finally time to enforce a curfew for minors—a rule that’s been on the books since 1992 but mostly ignored. It seems like the city’s desperate attempts to regain control are still falling short.
