Teens were sentenced to probation after a deadly schoolyard assault.
Two juveniles will be given probation and released back into their parents' custody after repeatedly beating a 13-year-old student to death.
Two teenage boys who confessed to police that they killed a classmate would be given probation and returned to their parents' custody.
The two 14-year-old boys were initially charged with manslaughter in the bullying death of Diego Stolz, but they will now do 150 hours of community service instead.
According to The Sun, the pair, who have not been identified, confessed to their role in the fatal assault of the Californian student.
Judge Roger Luebs of the Riverside County Superior Court ordered that the two defendants who were caught on camera punching Stolz would go to counseling and enroll in a character-building program.
On September 16, 2019, Stolz was beaten to death at Landmark Middle School.
Stolz is seen on video collapsing after being repeatedly punched and hitting his head on a pillar in the Moreno Valley schoolyard.
Despite the fact that the county District Attorney's Office and Probation Department wanted the two minors to spend more time, Luebs said the statute needed the least restrictive conditions possible in order to foster recovery.
Even if the two teenagers didn't want to kill Stolz, he said they were "directly responsible" for his death.
If the teenagers spend their time with more sophisticated and mature criminals, Luebs believes that locking them up would do more harm than good.
Both inmates have served 47 days in a juvenile detention center and have been ordered to return to the judge on June 25.
Luebs would send them to juvenile hall if they didn't comply.
