Prosecutors allege that an enraged Colorado father murdered his 13-year-old son after the boy discovered “compromising” photos of him eating feces from a diaper while wearing women's underwear.
The murder trial of Mark Redwine, 59, began Monday with opening statements from prosecutors who claim he flew into a rage after his teenage son, Dylan, may have mentioned or shown him the sordid photos on the night he was murdered in November 2012, according to the Denver Post.
“A damaged relationship exposed through compromising photographs, photographs in the hands of a 13-year-old who is disgusted by them, which sparked a violent rage in the defendant,” prosecutor Fred Johnson explained.
Redwine was charged with second-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death in 2017.
Dylan vanished from Redwine's Vallecito home during a court-ordered Thanksgiving 2012 visit. The boy's remains were discovered in 2013 and 2014, according to the Denver Post.
Johnson said Monday that prosecutors intend to demonstrate that Redwine murdered Dylan in his living room and then dumped his body off a trail near his home, all while deceiving investigators for months.
Traces of the boy's blood were discovered in Redwine's living room, and his son's body was discovered without his wallet or backpack.
Meanwhile, the Denver Post reported that Redwine's public defender insisted Dylan had no interest in visiting his father and suggested he may have been attacked by a bear or mountain lion after fleeing, claiming a tooth mark was discovered on his skull.
According to defense attorney John Moran, Redwine's son confronted him about the fetish photographs during a cross-country trip — and prosecutors will be unable to establish a link between his death and the revealing photographs.
Moran stated that the images "come from a dark place within Mark's private life." “If the prosecution can locate an expert to testify that people who do that are more likely to murder their child, that information will be provided to you... Mr. Redwine did not murder his son.”
Redwine was arrested in Washington while working as a truck driver, KUSA reported.
According to the station, Moran stated that there was no evidence linking his client to the boy's death.
“In addition to being innocent, Mr. Redwine has lost everything,” Moran said Monday. “He lost everything, and now he sits here claiming wrongful conviction.”
Cory, Dylan's older brother, previously stated that he saw the "disgusting" photos of his father as well and has called for "justice" in his brother's November 2020 death.
“Dylan requires strength from more than just us, and I cannot begin to express how much each and every person who is aware of his story contributes to that!” Cory Redwine stated on his Facebook page. “Every day, a child is forgotten by the legal system, which is not acceptable!!
The trial, which was delayed multiple times, is expected to last until mid-July, with testimony scheduled to begin Tuesday, according to the Denver Post.
