Yusef Staine at train at the Ronkonkoma LIRR station, stain shot died
A 20-year-old man was killed by his friend on a Long Island Rail Road train that was going to Manhattan early Wednesday, police say.
It was about 1:45 a.m. when Yusef Staine, who lives in West Babylon, got into a fight with the man he was riding with.
During the fight, the killer pulled a gun and shot Staine, who died right there.
It's been a long time since anyone has been arrested.
Suffolk County Police Det. Lt. Kevin Beyrer told Eyewitness News that the shooter and the victim "seem to have been traveling together and they seem to have known each other," at the scene on Wednesday. "I want to make it clear that this is not a random event." In this case, no one else was hurt.
"It doesn't look like it has anything to do with any other incidents in the past," Beyrer said.
As soon as the shooting started, the 1:51am train from Penn Station was supposed to leave. It stayed at the station as first responders were called in. There was an investigation going on at the station when the station was closed.
There were only two or three other people in the train car at the time of the shooting, police said. Nobody was hurt.
It hasn't happened since 1993, when Colin Ferguson opened fire on passengers on a train in Garden City Park. Six people were killed and 19 were hurt.
