Terrorist investigation opened after 18-year-old police shot dead
A history teacher beheaded outside his high school in a Paris suburb on Friday after showing his pupils a caricature of Prophet Muhammad.
Samuel Paty, 47, who taught history and geography at the school in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, northwest of the French capital, was shot dead by police on Friday evening by an 18-year-old man.
Anti-terrorism prosecutor launched an investigation into "murder connected to a terrorist group and involvement with terrorist suspects."
Police interviewed nine people on Saturday, including members of the attacker 's family, including his grandparents and 17-year-old brother.
Earlier this month, during a moral and civic education class debate on freedom of expression, Paty showed a class of teenage pupils a caricature from the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, sparking a angry response from some parents who requested his resignation. The teacher allegedly allowed Muslim students to leave the classroom if they wanted to.
Afterwards, a 13-year-old girl's father who didn't leave the class posted a video on YouTube saying the teacher showed a "naked man photo" stating he was the "Muslim prophet." The father called on other parents to join him against the teacher, whom he described as a "voyou" (thug).
To calm the situation, the school held a meeting with headteacher, instructor, and educational authority official.
The teacher had gone to local police station with school head earlier this month following a legal argument about his lesson. He allegedly told police he couldn't explain because the father's moaning daughter wasn't in class the day he showed the cartoon. The professor lived near the school and used to walk through a wood to get home, but had opted to change his way to walk through a suburban area because he felt threatened.
Jean-François Ricard, France's anti-terrorist lawyer, said the teacher was "assassinated for teaching" and the crime was an assault on the free speech concept. "This is the second attack in Charlie Hebdo trial that demonstrates the high degree of terrorist threat we face," Ricard said.
He said police fired and threatened them with a knife after firing an air rifle at them. The murderer Abdullakh Anzorov, an 18-year-old granted a residency card in March 2020, was a refugee and lived in Évreux, Normandy.
Ricard said the killer posted a victim's "macabre snap" on Twitter with a note identifying the victim.

The father then went with his daughter to the police department to lodge an formal complaint against the professor for "pornographic images."
"Professor strongly disputed that he asked Muslim students to identify themselves and leave class," Ricard said. He revealed some Charlie Hebdo caricatures, but suggested not getting to see anyone who may be offended, Ricard said.
College got many "threatening messages" the following days.
Ricard said investigators were seeking to determine the pre-crime run-up and whether the murderer had accomplices.
Jordan Bardella, the far-right Rassemblement National vice-president, accused parents of planning a "fatwa" against academics.
A crowd of mourners including fellow students, local officials, and the professor's former pupils assembled outside the school on Saturday.
