Lee MacMillan, a social media influencer who toured the globe in her van, has died. She was 28 years old.
MacMillan died Friday in Santa Barbara, Calif., according to a press release from Santa Barbara Police Lt. Joshua Morton.
MacMillan's Instagram account reported her death by suicide on Monday.
"After an exceptional life and a valiant fight against depression, our hearts are broken to share that Lee took her own life on Friday," the post said. "She shone brighter than the sun, was a magnetic force of nature, and was adored by so many."
Additionally, the statement said, "If there is one thing we can do for Lee now, in the midst of this soul-crushing tragedy, it is to spread the message that mental health is as real as physical health and that disease may hit anyone, regardless of how improbable it might seem. It's acceptable to be uncomfortable, it's acceptable to seek assistance, and it's completely appropriate to seek assistance."
"Lee was an outspoken supporter of mental health. She was candid and forthright about her own difficulties. She was seeking assistance from practitioners, family members, and colleagues. She was surrounded by supporters. She was not fighting this alone, she was not attempting to fight it alone "As stated in the article. "And yet she succumbed to this heinous disease. It is more complex than we are capable of appreciating or comprehending."
The statement concluded by reminding followers not to get fixated on how someone's life looks on social media and reiterating the value of checking in with family and friends.
MacMillan amassed a social media following alongside her ex-boyfriend Max Bidstrup as they embarked on journeys in a travel van with their dog Occy. They have amassed 497,000 subscribers to their YouTube channel Max & Lee.
