A devastating Christmas Day incident has left Ottawa’s Hintonburg neighbourhood in shock. Jolene Arreak, a vibrant 46-year-old, was killed in a violent confrontation at a home on Spadina Avenue. Another person was injured in the attack, which police are describing as brutal.
Manasi Foo, 35, has been charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder, leaving the community reeling from the unexpected tragedy.
A Festive Evening Turns Deadly
Police were called to the scene around 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Officers quickly arrested the suspect, while the injured victim was rushed to hospital. Their condition underscores the severity of the assault.
On Thursday, Foo appeared in court via Zoom, her charges casting a shadow over what should have been a season of celebration.
A Community in Mourning
The usually tranquil Hintonburg neighbourhood is struggling to make sense of the violence.
Michael Young, a long-time resident, called the event surreal. "Everyone knows each other here," he said. "A homicide on Christmas Day—it’s just unimaginable."
Julie Plourde, who lives next door to the scene, described her fear and heartbreak. "It’s terrifying," she said. "I’ve lived here for years and never thought something so horrific could happen so close to home." She added that Arreak had been visiting family for the holidays.
Remembering Jolene Arreak
Arreak, originally from Nunavut, was a former film producer known for her warmth and vibrant personality. Her cousin, Lena Nashook, shared fond memories of her.
"Jolene was the life of every gathering—full of joy, love, and kindness," Nashook said. "Losing her like this is beyond devastating."
Kitchissippi Councillor Jeff Leiper called the incident a profound tragedy and encouraged residents to seek support during this difficult time.
Ottawa’s 25th Homicide of 2024
Arreak’s death marks the city’s 25th homicide this year, a grim reminder of ongoing concerns about public safety. While shootings have declined, the overall homicide rate remains troubling.
As the investigation continues, police are asking anyone with information to come forward. This Christmas Day tragedy has left a neighbourhood grieving and a city searching for answers.
