Arnoldo Jimenez, FBI’s Most Wanted Fugitive Who Killed Wife After Wedding, Captured in Mexico After 12 Years
A wedding night turned into a brutal crime scene, and after more than a decade on the run, Arnoldo Jimenez has finally been caught.
Jimenez, one of the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted fugitives, was arrested in Monterrey, Mexico, on Thursday after 12 years of evading law enforcement. The Illinois man is accused of murdering his wife, Estrella Carrera, just hours after their wedding in 2012.
Authorities moved quickly, beginning extradition proceedings to return him to the U.S., where he faces a first-degree murder charge.
Douglas DePodesta, head of the FBI’s Chicago Field Office, stated that the agency remains determined to bring criminals to justice, no matter how long they hide or how far they flee.
Investigators say Jimenez, now 42, fatally stabbed 26-year-old Carrera inside his black 2006 Maserati on May 12, 2012—the day after their wedding. He then transported her body to her Burbank, Illinois, apartment and left it in a bathtub. She was later discovered still wearing her wedding dress.
A nationwide manhunt followed. Jimenez was charged with first-degree murder on May 15, 2012, and later indicted at the federal level for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
Deputy Chief William Casey of the Burbank Police Department said authorities never gave up in their pursuit of Jimenez, remaining committed to securing justice for Carrera and her family.
Since the FBI’s Most Wanted list was created in 1950, Jimenez has become the 522nd person to be featured on it.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether anyone will receive the $250,000 reward that was offered for information leading to his arrest.
